I am extremely sadden to report that Clyde Nabors EHF, Executive Director of NESDA/ISCET 1983-2001, has passed away after suffering a stroke last  Sunday."

VPEA's Gorbett - Best Association President

VPEA President Michael Gorbett was named Best State Association President at the 2008 NPSC in Buffalo, New York; 

Michael was nominated by Wallace Harrison EHF who noted the following in his nomination letter:
 
Michael Gorbett CSM has just been re-elected to his second term as president of the Virginia Professional Electronics Association. He is also in his third year as chairman of the highly successful Mid-Atlantic Conference.

Michael was deservedly the VPEA  Man of the Year two years in a row, and would probably have been named again this year except that it's an award bestowed by the president, making him ineligible.

Training the Trainer

At the MAC Conference discussion turned more than once to the issue of recruitment and training of technicians. Several shops of various sizes and from various areas shared common frustrations concerning how to find the right people, how to select the right people, how to train the right people and how to keep the right people.

The executive board responded and voted to task the Education Committee (chaired by Jeff Dougherty of Intrepid TV Repair) with this mission. At the board meeting which concluded the conference. The purpose of this article is to lay out the “vision” of this committee and to elicit any and all resources which could aid us in this mission.

Many technical schools have ceased to offer consumer electronics courses. With this in mind, the realization hit that there is an ur-gent need for coherent training materials and programs which could be used to develop a more productive and efficient employee base for independent servicers. All too often training is left to chance, to the “sink or swim” methodology, or is being conducted by personnel who have no background in basic principles of effective training.
